I bought an Ipod Photo and when i realized that almost all of my mp3 files didnt have pictures or album cover/art i was quite upset. After searching the web for a good mp3 tag editor WITH ability to auto-download the cover art directly to the file, i found out that there's not a lot of good software that does this. Of Course you can use Musicmatch Jukebox or Windows Media Player to get pictures but they are not very good for tagging, auto-complete fields or batch renaming. I tried many programs but not one works as well as this one. I have more than 10 000 MP3 and i got them organized, renammed with correct tags and album cover very quickly using this software. It's great for my Ipod photo !!!

Generating Tags

Besides the above mentioned operation (renaming files with use of tags' info) the program also allows to do the opposite. Sometimes filenames and folder's name already contain all necessary information about songs, and you just have to copy it to tags.

The procedure is similar to the previous one. Select a group of the files in main window, press "Generate tags"-button and set the format of the existing filenames at the top of the window. (Attention: the program is unable to determine the format automatically and needs your help in order to generate tags correctly. Filenames may look like "artist-title.MP3", "title-album.OGG" and so on. The program doesn't comprehend that, so it can easily go astray. By setting the format you help the program to associate parts of filenames with correct values.)

Generating tags from parts of file's name and/or using folder's name

Besides, you may change additional options: choose what to do with already existing tags and set values. These options almost don't need to be changed. Let's take a look at the first one.

If a file already contains tags but we want to change them, there are several options:

  • Keep the existing tags unchanged.
  • Overwrite selected fields.
  • Overwrite only empty fields.

These modes can be selected in "Fields from tags"-menu. To overwrite necessary fields just check corresponding boxes. To check/uncheck all the boxes use the menu that appears when you right-click on a box.

In the preview window you can also see what data will be stored when you generate the tags. Select files which are suitable for the selected format and press button "Generate tags". After that tags will be recorded, and in the list there will be only files that where not selected before generation.

To use folder name as a value you should write it down in "Format"-menu and separate it by backslashes "\". Example: format "%A\%T" will write folder name in "Author"-field and filename – in "Title"-field. You'll be able to use subfolders.
